BB 6: Betty Hits The Bahamas

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

Hi kids! Its me, Betty. We made it to the Bahamas! It was a loooong sail to get here but, we did it. 😊

The Bahamas are very different from the United States. There are a million little islands with hardly any trees, and even the water is a different color - beautiful turquoise.

Nanny and Grampy learned how to tell the depth of the water by the colour – they found out that the underwater sand bars are kind of yellowish blue. They found that out by getting Elizabeth M stuck in one! We had to wait for the tide to come up to float us off.

The Bahamas don’t seem to have as many birds as Florida. Back in Florida, we saw lots of pelicans. They are very big and clumsy. They would land in the water with a big splash and sometimes even crash into our boat. They scoop up water in the pouch under their bill and let the water dribble out their cheeks. Then they swallow what ever they caught with a big gulp.

There are lots of little lizards here. They run everywhere in the leaves. When they want to go fast, they hold their tail up in a little curl behind them.

There are big lizards too – iguanas. They are as big as dogs and a little scary looking. Nanny said they only eat leaves and fruit, so I guess I’m ok.

The marina we stayed at first was really nice. There were gardens and a nice pool where Nanny and Grampy would swim.

I liked to hang out there too but one day I got my tail stuck in the chair. Ouch!

People at the marina had lots of pets, even the people on sailboats. My favorite dog was this one – his name is Rollo, like the candy. I think he was doing a dance in this picture.

One strange pet was Bacon the pig. He lives in an apartment! When I first saw him, I thought he was a dog, but then he oinked and wagged his curly little tail. His owner has to pick up his poops in a dog poop bag. Ewwww!

Here’s an animal nobody wants for a pet… we saw this little alligator was in a pond back in Florida. No swimming!

When we went go to the beach there’s a ton of sand and cool shells.

These snails were all wedged in the holes in the rocks at the beach. I guess that helps them hold on when the surf crashes over them.

Nanny and Grampy have been snorkelling to see what else is in the water here. They have seen so many fish! Its very cool underwater.

This is a blue parrot fish. Nanny thinks their teeth look like a person’s teeth. They use them to bite the coral. Zoom in!

We are in a place now that has pigs who live wild on an island. They are super friendly, mostly because people give them treats to eat. They swim out and some people even get in the water with them. Not me! Their pointy little hooves could go right through my shell. Yikes!

I wonder what we will see next on this trip?
