Crew Log for Monday, August 29th, 2022

After a very quiet night, we pulled up the anchor and headed for Port Mouton. Unfortunately our timing was a bit off since we just missed some of our family who were staying at White Point on the weekend. While the weather on Tuesday wasn't looking great, we really wanted to stop and visit Carter's Beach, which was a favorite with some of our family.

The weather was hot and sunny, a perfect day to spend on the beach. Port Mouton was only 23 nautical miles from Port Medway, so we should have the entire afternoon to play beach bum. The trip was relaxingly uneventful. The winds were light so we motored sailed most of the way.

We have been relying on the Guide Book and reviews in Navionics to help us determine where to anchor. However, occasional, like this day, some of the descriptions don't make sense. The recommended spot on Navionics had us anchoring right in front of channel. After surveying the beach we decided to anchor between Spectacle Island and Mink Island, right in front of the main beach. It was reasonably well protected and far enough off the shore as to not bother anyone. After a quick lunch we dinghied ashore to the far end of the beach.

The sand here was incredible. Very soft with shinny flecks all through it. And while the water had a reputation for being very cold, it was quite comfortable (altho we are very spoiled with the warm water temperature in the Northumberland Strait). The water had an amazing blue colour and was very clear. For a brief moment we could almost see ourselves on a beach in the Bahamas!

One other boat arrived later in the afternoon, sv Plover, a ketch from the States. We saw them in Lunenburg and would run into them again later down the shore. It's funny how we all seem to go our separate ways and travel at our own pace, yet we keep running into one other.

Given the forecast for the following day, we normally would have stayed put. The winds were predicted to build throughout the day and into Wednesday. We anticipated that the following day would be a tough one so we prepped the boat and had an early supper. We planned to leave at "first light" and head for Shelburne, hopefully before things got too bad.

Shameless Self Promotion. Carter's Beach, NS

We really did enjoy the day at Carter's Beach. Apparently, a lot of other folks did as well since there were still several groups on the beach at 7:30. We enjoyed another beautiful sunset and went to bed early.

On to Shelburne!
